Robert Llimós: Avistament — 10 Years

Curated by Bruna Battistini

Robert Llimós: Univers Llimós Avistament 10 anys presents a significant selection of works produced by the Catalan artist in the decade following his now-emblematic extraterrestrial sighting in Fortaleza, Brazil. Far from a mere anecdote, this encounter catalyzed one of the most prolific and imaginative phases of his career, opening a new chapter in which perception, presence, and the limits of the visible expand into unexpected territories.

The exhibition opens with the sculpture Miraestels, installed in the museum’s garden at the entrance. The piece depicts a man gazing toward the sky while holding a star—an image charged with quiet intuition. Created in the early 2000s, Llimós has often suggested that Miraestels may have been a precursor, a kind of foreshadowing or premonitory gesture, anticipating the extraordinary experience he would later live. Its placement at the threshold of the exhibition reflects this idea of a “first contact,” guiding visitors into the narrative that unfolds inside.

Inside the museum, the show brings together sculptures, watercolors, and large-format paintings—some of them never before shown to the public. These works reveal the force of an artistic vocabulary that Llimós has refined over more than five decades: a synthesis of line, form, and chromatic intensity through which figures are often drawn as if suspended in space. In the context of his post-sighting production, this vocabulary becomes a bridge between the earthly and the otherworldly, between memory and vision.

This exhibition constitutes the second chapter of the Museu D’Or’s ongoing homage to the artist. The institution is located within La Fortalesa, a remarkable ensemble of restored structures surrounding a vast defensive castle near Girona. The site includes the five-star Sants Metges Hotel and the haute-cuisine restaurant A Tempo, advised by Jordi Cruz—spaces that integrate hospitality, architecture, and contemporary culture within a singular heritage landscape.

The Museu D’Or itself occupies three floors of the historic castle, formerly the quarters of the military troops. Today, these rooms house an extensive collection of jewelry, silverware, tableware, and decorative arts, led by the creative vision of Elsa Peretti—the celebrated jewelry designer who modeled for Dalí and later collaborated with Tiffany & Co., and who is considered one of the key figures behind the project.

Another wing of the complex hosts the Espai Quim Hereu, where the young painter presents large-scale, imaginative canvases that resonate with a certain Dalinian spirit. The ensemble also includes the Dor restaurant, an accessible dining space within the monumental infrastructure of La Fortalesa.

Within this constellation of art, heritage, and contemporary creation, Univers Llimós Avistament 10 anys situates Robert Llimós’ work in dialogue with a space that mirrors the artist’s own trajectory: expansive, layered, visionary. The exhibition invites visitors to revisit a defining moment in Llimós’ artistic journey and to witness how a singular encounter transformed into a decade of exploration—one in which the boundaries between the real and the extraordinary continue to blur.
